Fact Bulletin #2: The Eight Principles Guiding the Board's Decisions
Did you know... Every decision made by the Board of Trustees is evaluated against eight equally-weighted guiding principles outlined in the Appendix to Board Policy 1: Division Foundational Statements?
These principles are not mere suggestions—they hang in the PRSD boardroom and serve as the Board’s collective commitment to the community. They ensure the Board consistently balances fiscal responsibility with educational excellence, and every principle is considered together, never in isolation.
Here are the key commitments the Board makes with every vote:
- We ensure resources are always directed to achieve the greatest possible impact on student learning.
- We commit to being transparent and open by providing all budget facts and ensuring respectful relationships through effective communication.
- We support and respect our schools' ability to make decisions that best serve their specific student populations.
- We constantly review our initiatives, practices, and procedures to ensure they support our Division goals.
- We continuously look for ways to achieve efficiencies as a school division, making the most of every tax dollar.
- We make choices based on data, which includes consultation with those affected where appropriate.
- We ensure student success through the attraction, development, and retention of quality people.
- We ensure health and safety for all our students and staff.

Exercising the right to observe school board meetings is a critical step in civic engagement that strengthens the link between citizens and their elected educational representatives.
