Peace River Teacher recipient of Distinguished Service Award

For over 15 years, T.A. Norris Middle School Science Teacher Byron Schamehorn has been a pillar of support and inspiration for youth exploring STEM education.

Recently, Mr. Schamehorn received national recognition from Youth Science Canada as one of nine exceptional individuals who have made outstanding contributions to youth STEM development across Canada through innovation, dedication and leadership.

Nominated by T.A. Norris Middle School Principal Jonathan Pittman, Mr. Schamehorn has supported young scientists through his dedication to the Dan Moffett Memorial Science Fair, his involvement with the Peace Country Regional Science Fair as a mentor as well as the entertainment and activities coordinator, and his work with Canada-Wide Science Fair participants.

"For over a decade, he has provided invaluable guidance, encouragement, and expertise to students, helping them develop and refine their scientific projects. His ability to engage with youth and cultivate their passion for STEM has left a lasting impact on countless students, many of whom have pursued further studies and careers in science and technology," wrote Mr. Pittman in his nomination letter.

When asked about why he chooses to be involved with the annual science fair, Mr. Schamehorn explained he wanted to provide more opportunities for students interested in STEM to experience the same level of competition and drive for excellence that exists in athletics.

"As a Jr. High Science Teacher I get to introduce my students to their first dissection labs. It’s a cool experience to see them get their ‘hands dirty’ trying out a potential new skill for the first time. It’s one of the best experiences for all of us each year,” Mr. Schamehorn said.

Congratulations Mr. Schamehorn on your well-deserved recognition!
