Peace Regional Outreach Campus Celebrates 30 Years of Graduates

Susie Friesen, a young woman, with shoulder-length auburn hair, wearing a tiara and a black dress, holds a microphone.

The Peace Regional Outreach Campus hosted a celebration of accomplishment on June 13 at the Misery Mountain Ski Chalet in Peace River, with staff and families of 20 graduates gathered to celebrate the 2025 cohort. This year's ceremony was particularly special, marking 30 years of the Outreach Campus providing important alternative education to Peace River and the surrounding communities.

One of the highlights of the evening was the powerful speech delivered by graduate Susie Friesen. Susie, also the Outreach Campus' recipient of the Governor General's award, spoke candidly about the challenges she and her fellow graduates overcame.

A Journey of Detours, Doubts, and Determination

Susie’s speech wasn't just a reflection on earning a diploma; it was a testament to the collective strength and resilience of the graduates. She acknowledged the late nights, early mornings, and the moments of doubt that are often part of the journey. She also emphasized that the Outreach graduates' paths were not always straightforward.

Susie bravely shared her personal story, one that challenged conventional expectations. She told those gathered that she grew up in a household where girls were not encouraged to pursue their education. Despite this, Susie continued to work toward her own goals, moving out at 18, working three jobs, battling - and overcoming - burnout and health concerns, all while continuing to work toward her Grade 12 diploma.

Beyond the GPA: The True Measure of Success

Susie's message to anyone who has ever doubted themselves was particularly impactful: "You are not your GPA. You are not your worst day or your hardest class. You are the strength it took to get up the next morning. You are the progress you've made, even if no one else sees it." This powerful statement underscored the true spirit of the Peace Regional Outreach Campus – recognizing and celebrating growth, grit, and the unseen battles fought every day.
