Fact Bulletin #6: Securing Our Future: The Annual Capital Plan
Did you know... The PRSD Board of Trustees is responsible for developing an annual Capital Plan, a critical strategic document that advocates to the Government of Alberta for necessary funding for new schools, modernizations, and facility upgrades?
While the annual budget covers the day-to-day operations of the Division, the Capital Plan focuses entirely on the future of the Division’s physical infrastructure. This responsibility is a key component of the Board's governance role, ensuring that current and future students have safe, modern, and effective learning environments.
- A Forward-Looking Document: The Capital Plan is a multi-year priority list submitted to Alberta Education. It is not an approval of spending, but rather a request for provincial funding for major, high-cost projects that fall outside the regular maintenance budget.
- Prioritizing Needs: The Board uses data on student enrolment projections, facility condition assessments, and program needs to rank projects. This ensures that the most critical needs—whether for a new school in a growing community or a major modernization of an aging facility—are at the top of our advocacy list.
- Ensuring Health and Safety: Capital planning is directly tied to our Guiding Principle of ensuring health and safety for our students and staff. By persistently identifying and advocating for building upgrades, we are continually working to create environments conducive to learning and well-being.
- Strategic Advocacy: The Board commits significant time and effort to developing and advocating for this plan, recognizing that it represents our best opportunity to secure the millions of dollars required to maintain a high standard for our schools across the Peace River region.
