Fact Bulletin #4: The Essential Role of Your Elected Trustee

Did you know... Your PRSD Trustee is a member of a corporate Board, meaning they have no individual authority, but collectively, they are responsible for setting the strategic direction, goals, and policies for the entire Division?

Board Policy 3: Role of the Trustee clearly defines the role of each Trustee as contributing to the work of the Board to ensure the Board achieves their vision, mission, and principles. This role is multifaceted and essential to effective governance.

  • Corporate Accountability: Trustees take an oath of office to work diligently in the cause of public education.

  • Key Responsibilities of an Individual Trustee: Policy 3 outlines specific duties each Trustee must fulfill to ensure the Board functions effectively:

    • Preparation and Participation: Attending Board meetings prepared with knowledge of policies and reports to contribute to decisions.

    • Supporting the Board: Supporting the decisions of the Board once a majority vote is taken, ensuring unity in action for the Division.

    • Community Liaison: Bringing forward and advocating for local issues and concerns from their community, while also providing the Superintendent with counsel and advice based on community familiarity.

    • Upholding Policy: Adhering to and familiarizing themselves with all Division policies and procedures.

The Board is collectively responsible for setting direction, developing policy, approving the budget, and ensuring quality educational services through its Superintendent—a task impossible without dedicated individuals fulfilling the responsibilities of Policy 3.
