Pride Month
June is Pride Month!
During this month, 2SLGBTQI+ communities and allies have the opportunity to celebrate the diversity, resilience, contributions and importance of 2SLGBTQI+ people. It is also a time to acknowledge their history, the hardships that they have gone through, and the progress that has been made over the years.
This month, and all throughout the year, PRSD is committed to recognizing and supporting 2SLGBTQI+ people in the division and making sure our schools are a safe space for all.
We have compiled some great resources below for students, staff, and parents, if anyone needs support or assistance:
Students:
- Skipping Stone - Skipping Stone offers online support groups. One is called Creative Hearts, which is for queer and trans youth ages 9-12, and the other is Open Hearts, which is for all gender diverse individuals of any age. There is also a parent support group, as well as great information and resources on their website.
- Brite Line - Brite Line is a 2SLGBTQI+ support line that serves as a crisis line resource.▪️ www.facebook.com/lgbtqyouthgp - A Youth Mentor is available at North Reach in Grande Prairie that offers weekly meet ups. They can also be found on Instagram at @youthmentorgp
Staff:
- Egale - This website has excellent resources for staff regarding supporting 2SLGBTQI+ youth, pronoun usage, affirming and inclusive language, and components of human identity.
- fYrefly in Schools - fYrefly in Schools is a program that is run through the University of Alberta that provides education for staff and students. The rural schools coordinator is Alex Marshall and she can be reached at ruralout@ualberta.ca.
Parents:
- Egale - This website also has excellent resources for parents, such as what to do when your child comes out to you, understanding the components of human identity, and how to support your gender diverse child.
- PFLAG Canada - PFLAG Canada offers a lot of resources, and there are multiple chapters within Alberta.
