Students Explore Career Paths at Aboriginal Youth Career Workshop
On Wed. Oct. 14, several students from Peace River High School, Peace Regional Outreach Campus, and Grimshaw Public School had the opportunity to attend the annual Aboriginal Youth Career Workshop hosted by the Peace River Aboriginal Interagency Committee. Students from these three PRSD schools were joined by students from other neighbouring Divisions for a full day of learning about future career posibilities. The day began with a welcome, opening prayer and Land Acknowledgement followed by a motivational address from Sam Laboucan, Corporate and Community Relations team member witht he First Nations Health Consortium. Sam has more than 30 years experience in family and social services and believes strongly in resiliency, personal accountability, and self-worth. During his presentation at the Career Workship, Sam spoke about his own journey through multiple different careers, the challenges he encountered along the way, as well as how he overcame those challenges.
"There's going to be a lot of times where you are going to be thinking to yourself, 'Do I really want to do this? Can I do this?' My answer to you is as long as you have belief within yourself, and you know what direction you want to go, the sky is the limit," Sam said.
Students then engaged with the business representatives at their booths and in table discussions before enjoying lunch together. After lunch, students engaged in one more table discussion before hearing from Thomas Pritchard of Energy Alberta and Laura Magnusson who has expertise and is a leader in Indigenous Initiatives.
