An update on the slide area near Peace River High School
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we prepare for the start of the 2026-2027 school year, I want to share an important update about the slide on the hill along 102 Street, which affects both Peace River town property and our school property.
While the investigations into the slide have been ongoing, the PRSD has taken several proactive and deliberate steps. Our School Operations team and external experts have worked diligently to understand what caused the slide. The geotechnical and engineering studies have been completed, and we are expecting to receive a comprehensive report by mid-September. Through the course of the studies, external experts have confirmed that the school building itself remains structurally sound.
Part of our response to the slide is to also remove the lean-to structure that is on the southwest side of the building. The materials stored there will be moved into sea-cans that will be placed in an area directly in front of the CTS Shop and on the basketball court. We are also planning to install new fencing on the southwest side of our property and around the new storage zone. Students will be directed to stay clear of these areas.
The Peace River School Division is working closely with both the Town of Peace River and Alberta Education and Childcare to identify and implement further proactive solutions, if required.
As we welcome students back to Peace River High School, we are committed to keeping families informed.
Sincerely,
Jeff Thompson, PhD
Superintendent of Schools
