Supporting Science Education: PRSD Introduces Specialized Learning Crates
As we prepare for the upcoming school year, the Peace River School Division is excited to share a closer look at a major resource initiative designed to bring the new science curriculum to life. Thanks to a recent curriculum grant, our central staff has been hard at work planning, organizing, and assembling specialized Science Learning Crates for Grade 1–6 classrooms.
These grade-specific crates are fully packed with the physical materials and instructions necessary to conduct a wide variety of interactive, hands-on activities. By taking care of the prep work centrally, we are ensuring teachers can focus on what they do best: fostering curiosity and critical thinking without the hassle of sourcing random supplies.
Tailored for Classroom Success
Beyond the physical items, these crates serve as a practical instructional guide. Each crate highlights for teachers exactly how many assessable KUSPs (Knowledge, Understanding, and Skills and Procedures) they will fulfill by completing the activities. This clear mapping ensures that every hands-on lesson directly aligns with curriculum standards, keeping learning focused and measurable.
Supporting Every Teaching Style
We know that flexibility is key in the classroom. These crates are being distributed to every Grade 1–6 classroom that indicated they would use them. For classrooms or schools that preferred a different instructional approach, our central curriculum coordinators have carefully curated custom bins of books to support literature-based science learning.
These crates and book bins are part of our broader, ongoing effort to equip schools with tangible, high-impact resources, which has also included recent professional development sessions for our math and social studies teachers.
We are incredibly grateful to our dedicated central curriculum coordinator team for their hard work in prepparing these resources, and we look forward to seeing how these tools support a love for discovery in our classrooms this fall!
