Social Studies Mentor Texts Now in Every K–6 School
Peace River School Division has purchased over 200 book titles to support the new K–6 Social Studies curriculum, and every one of our Kindergarten to Grade 6 schools, including colony schools, has received a kit for each grade level.
These carefully-selected titles, also known as mentor texts in the education world, are high-quality picture books and non-fiction titles that bring curriculum concepts to life for students. They give teachers relevant, ready-to-use materials to help navigate the new curriculum's organizing ideas, while exposing students to diverse perspectives and engaging stories connected to what they're learning.
The bundles were selected through a collaboration between Calgary Catholic School Division and United Library Services, with titles matched to the learning outcomes in the new curriculum. Many of the texts also align with Edmonton Catholic School Division's Curriculum Crates, free, ready-to-use example lessons covering outcomes, instruction, assessment, and resources, available to all Alberta teachers from Kindergarten to Grade 6.
Best of all, we were able to do this at no cost to schools. The purchase was made possible through the Social Studies new curriculum grant.
