How can the PRSD and EEO Support the Needs of STM?
On Monday, March 11, Superintendent of Schools Adam Murray, Deputy Superintendent Jeff Thompson, and three members of the Board of Trustees hosted an open-house public information meeting at E.E Oliver Elementary School from 5 to 7 p.m. to listen to community questions and concerns, as well as to answer questions about the future of education in Fairview.
In December, 2023 Grande Prairie Regional Catholic Division (GPCSD) announced that St. Thomas More School (STM) needed to be closed, indefinitely. As a result, GPCSD and the STM community have needed to find a more long-term temporary solution in time for the 2024-2025 school year.
At the March 11 public meeting, Superintendent Murray told those gathered that GPCSD had an ask on the table to the PRSD Board of Trustees regarding whether the PRSD would permit GPCSD to build a temporary, modular school building on the property of E.E. Oliver Elementary. In consultation with the Town of Fairview, it was determined that the EEO property would be the best place for the temporary modular school as there is existing ground infrastructure in place there already.
The PRSD Board of Trustees will discuss and may ultimately vote on this matter at their March 14 board meeting. These meetings are always open to the public to attend as observers. The meeting begins at 10 a.m. at Central Operations in Grimshaw. A virtual attendance options is available through Google Meet: meet.google.com/qck-uvqs-vad.
Also discussed at the meeting was the possible location of the proposed temporary modular school, which was identified as the yard space between 104 and 105 Avenue, west of Child's World Day Care. Placement of a temporary modular school building on this space would still allow space for a soccer field, as well as smaller additional playground structure for STM's youngest students.
Anyone with comments or concerns regarding this proposal is asked to contact their School Board Trustee. Contact information for the Trustees is available HERE.
