Families Matter Week
The board approved a request to designate February 18 to 21, 2025 as Families Matter Week.
"This has been a tradition with the Peace River School Division since the first year I was principal,” said Superintendent Adam Murray. “We just wanted to make sure that everyone out there takes a week to acknowledge the importance of their whole village and how important that whole village is to student success.”
Policy 19
The Board provided second reading to the updated Policy 19 - Welcoming, Caring, Respectful, and Safe Learning Environment, after receiving no public feedback on the proposed changes. Third reading of the policy was tabled until the September meeting to allow trustees time to bring the draft updated policy to their school council meetings.
Trustee Sanctions
The Board of Trustees held an in camera session to discuss Board motion #15747, which was made at a special meeting of the board on December 21, 2023, and Board motion #15862, which was made during the regular board meeting held on June 20, 2024. Both of these motions have to do with the sanctions placed on Ward 4 Trustee Moise Dion. Following their in camera session, once the public portion of the meeting had resumed, the board made the following motions:
- Motion #15878: That Board Chair Crystal Owens write a letter to Trustee Dion, copying the board, on communication requirements discussed relating to motion #15747.
- Motion #15881: That Vice-Chair Buchinski determine a special meeting date that works for the Board to address motions #15747 and #15862 once all required information has been received.
- Motion #15882: That Trustee Dion will be censured during Board meetings until after the Special meeting (TBD) of motion #15881. All Trustee Dion’s communications are to be directed to Board Vice-Chair Buchinski in writing via email or other electronic means.
Request for payment of Legal Fees
The Board reviewed a request from Trustee Dion for the Division to pay his personal legal fees, incurred as a result of his participation in mediation as required by Motion #15862. A motion to pay the legal fees was defeated 5-1, with Trustee Dion abstaining from the vote.
