Hiring Bus Drivers

Peace River School Division is seeking School Bus Drivers throughout the Division.  Over the past few years, the Division has noted a decrease in the number of Substitute Drivers available to cover routes. This has been exacerbated due to drivers on medical leave or permanently leaving part way through the year. The consequence, in some cases, has been the cancellation of routes and occasionally, cancellations of daily trips.

You can become a school bus driver, obtain your class 2S license and begin earning wages.

A class 5 license w/o GDL is the minimum requirement to begin training.  Enjoy the gratifying rewards thousands of School Bus Drivers experience each day. Join this team of Professional Drivers by calling 624-3006.

When you are a successful applicant, its important to know the training we provided to ensure you are a confident and safe driver.  Training is broken down into three stages.

1. Class 2S Melt/S Endorsement - All new hires that do not have their class 1 or class 2 are scheduled for training with our in-house instructors.  Click here for Class 2S Training Manual

2. First Aid - We rely on the driver to be able to perform first aid to any student should an emergency happen.

3. Drive Alongs - After successfully passing your Class 2 road test, the trainers coordinate you to go with two full time regular drivers to become familiarized with school bus routes, student management and regular day-to-day duties.

New Hire Upfront Costs:

  • Knowledge test at registries (completed after Class 2S training)
  • Drivers Medical (booked through your local clinic physician)
  • Upgrading License (completed after successful Road Test)

These upfront costs are reimbursed after a minimum of three (3) months as an active driver or upon successful applicant on full-time route, whichever is sooner.

Training Hours

After completion of six months as an active driver or upon becoming a full time driver, training hours for your Class 2S are paid out to a maximum of 53.5 hours.

Pre-School Children

One area that attracts Drivers is allowing their pre-school children on the bus.  This allows parents with younger children to drive. The anecdotal evidence shows that we lose potential Substitute and Permanent Drivers due to the lack of child care within our Division. The qualifications for allowing this are:

  1. Child must be at least one year of age, 18 kg (40 lbs.), and can walk unassisted, to allow for forward facing seats.
  2. If, due to the weight and height of your child, (less than 40 pounds or 41 inches) it is necessary to secure your child in a child seating assembly, such seating assembly shall:
            • Carry a (CMVSS) Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard approved label.
            • Meet manufacturer specifications for the height and weight of the child.
            • Be provided by the bus driver at no cost to the board.
            • Be secured by a CSA approved seat belt restraint designed for school                        buses (installed by school board personnel).
  3. Driver is to supply the car seat, as well as the documentation showing the seat may be used for the purpose intended.
  4. Transportation Department approves the allowance of a pre-school child on a case-by-case basis and will consider factors such as the length of the route, type of route, age of the child, behavior of the child during travel and impact to students.
  5. Transportation Department may assess the same factors at any time and can ask the driver to cease bringing a pre-school child on the bus without notice.

Internal Recruitment

We also like to offer Educational Assistants the ability to drive bus. Anecdotal evidence shows that  employees do succeed as both an Educational Assistant and as a Bus Driver.

We would like to request that Administrators assist the Division by encouraging Support Staff to consider this as an option.  Administrators are asked to provide the commitment that sufficient time will be made available for transportation duties. This has the added benefit of having Support Staff on site with a Class 2 license.

Referral bonus

There is currently a bonus to employees who actively recruit a new driver, either licensed or unlicensed. The incentive is based on the following:

  • Incentive is $200 for each driver referred, paid to the staff person that made the referral
  • Driver cannot have worked for the Division in the past
  • Substitute Driver: Drive twenty times AND remain a minimum of six months with the Division as an active Driver
  • Permanent Driver: End of probationary status
