Board meeting highlights - September 17, 2020
Trustees approve purchase of school buses
The board approved a recommendation to purchase four new school buses from Western Canada I.C Bus Inc. The buses will replace older buses in the fleet as per Administrative Procedure 502, Acquisition of Equipment which allocates funds to the replacement of buses older than 11 years. Peace River School Division (PRSD) operates school bus transportation for approximately 3000 students in PRSD, Holy Family Catholic Regional School Division, Conseil du Nord-Quest and Grande Prairie Catholic School Division.
Covid-19 update from Superintendent Bennett
PRSD Superintendent Paul Bennett updated the board on the division’s progress regarding school re-entry as it relates to the Covid-19 pandemic. Bennett shared updates on measures and precautions being taken in schools as well as educational delivery options offered to families including at-home learning and home education.
Racism Sensitivity Training
Trustees reviewed dates in October to take part in “The Equitable Workplace: Cultivating Attitudes of Anti-Racism and Allyship” training. Following recent discussions and highlighting of anti-racism on a global level, PRSD decided it was timely to review and ensure that the division has clear policy in this area. The board approved the recommended training and felt it would be an appropriate starting place for trustees and senior administration to undertake prior to including anti-racism statements in PRSD’s Policy 19 Welcoming, Caring, Respectful and Safe Learning Environment. Modules in the training program include: “Challenging what we think we know about racism”, “Anti-Racism in Action: Exploring power, privilege and power in the workplace” and, “Inclusive Leadership: Moving beyond diversity towards racial equity.”
Departmental presentation review
Trustees reviewed the 2020-2021 PRSD Departmental Presentation to the Board Schedule. Each month, various PRSD department leaders provide updates and information for trustees in the form of a formal presentation with time for questions and answers during a regular board meeting. Departmental presentations scheduled for this school year include: Learning Services, Home Education, Transportation, Numeracy, Literacy, First Nations Metis and Inuit learning, Technology and Facilities.
