Board Meeting Highlights, September 2019

Superintendent Bennett provides preliminary enrolment review
Superintendent Paul Bennett provided the board with a preliminary update on PRSD’s student enrolment
count. PRSD’s enrolment count as of September 11, 2019, is 3050 students which exceeded both June 2019
Enrolment numbers and the Spring Projected Enrolment. School divisions in Alberta receive funding based on a
per-student basis as of September 30 of each year. Bennett will present trustees with the official enrolment
report at the October regular board meeting.

ASBA Youth Summit Presentation from Attendees
The Board of Trustees were given a presentation at the regular Board Meeting on September 19, 2019 from
two Peace River School Division (PRSD) students Brenna Senft, a grade 11 student at Peace River High School
and Skylar Gummesen, a grade 11 student at Paul Rowe Jr/Sr High School, who attended the Provincial Youth
Mental Health Summit held in Red Deer on June 3 & 4, 2019. This event was an initiative by the Mental Health
Commission of Canada and was attended by 135 grade 9-11 students from around the Province of Alberta and
Yellowknife. Both Brenna and Skylar brought back many initiatives to their respective schools that would be
beneficial to the mental health of students in PRSD. “Thank you for letting us learn about Mental Health, and
for helping to make our school communities better,” said Brenna. “I am so proud of both of you, you are great
champions for PRSD, I am confident that you will continue to make a difference in the capacity of mental health
of the students in our school division, said Darren Kuester, Board Chair.

Instructional Materials Centre
The Board of Trustees received a report on a recent operational review conducted on the Instructional
Materials Centre (IMC). A review committee consisting of several school principals and senior management
met on September 9, 20119 to provide a recommendation to Paul Bennett, Superintendent of Schools
regarding the future direction of IMC Services. Bennett accepted a recommendation that the IMC would
remain open and an IMC technician would be hired for the balance of the 2019-2020 school year. It was
decided that the 2019-2020 school year will be a transition period, prior to any further changes being made to
the IMC. Throughout the remainder of the school year resources will be culled. IMC courier services will be
maintained at 3 days a week (Tuesday – Thursday).

PRSD receives Government “Report Card”
During the regular board meeting held on September 19, 2019, the board of trustees reviewed Peace River
School Division’s (PRSD) results from the Accountability Pillar Report (APR). PRSD is thrilled to report that we
have improved on three measures updated on the May 2019 APR. PRSD exceeded provincial averages in five
measures. More details can be found in the media release HERE.

Home Education Steering Committee in PRSD

Peace River School Division (PRSD) has a desire to fulfill its vision of first choice for students, therefore greater
efforts are being made to ensure that students and their parents are more encouraged to access Home
Education programming through PRSD. To maximize the appropriateness of the Division’s Home Education
program, it is necessary to form a Home Education Steering Committee. The purpose of the Peace River School
Division (PRSD) Home Education Steering Committee is to provide the Division with ongoing advice on a variety
of matters pertaining to home education within PRSD. The members of the PRSD Home Education Steering
Committee will work collaboratively to engage home education families, advise on student programming
matters and to advise on operational matters.
The Home Education Steering Committee will consist of one School Board Trustee appointed by the Board of
Trustees, the Superintendent of Schools, PRSD Home Education Coordinator, two students who are registered
as homeschooled students with PRSD, two parents of homeschooled students and one PRSD school
administrator. For more information regarding our Home Education program or the PRSD Home Education
Steering Committee please call Central Operations at 780.624.3601.

3 Year Capital Plan
Management staff reviewed the revised capital plan to be submitted to Alberta Education. After partnering
with the MD of Opportunity in the Spring of 2019 to complete a value scoping session in Red Earth Creek, the
board approved that a new school request replacing the existing Red Earth Creek School, would be the number
two priority on the board’s capital plan.

Central Operations Open House
The Board of Trustees confirmed the date of Central Operations Open House, which will take place on Tuesday,
October 22, 2019, from 7-9 pm. There will be guided tours available to the public with light snacks and
refreshments provided. “We are very excited to be in the Town of Grimshaw, and for the public to see the
many improvements that have been made over the past year”, said Board Chair Darren Kuester.
Communication regarding the Open House will be sent out to various social media platforms and to the public
by the end of September.
