PRSD celebrates Education Week and Mental Health Awareness Week

April 30 - May 4, 2018 is Education Week and May 7 - 11 is Mental Health Awareness Week – a celebration of education and recognition of the importance of positive mental health.

We are very pleased to host various activities and events during these special weeks of awareness that highlight the importance of education and mental health in our lives, families, schools, communities and the world. Both educational needs and mental health needs are crucial aspects of well-being, learning and success. There are many events happening in school communities throughout the division, please join your local school in celebration of Education Week and Mental Health Awareness Week - our doors are always open.

Here’s a listing of events happening in our schools:

Manning Elementary School
During Education Week, Manning Elementary School is hosting the “Trickster Residency” where all students in the school help to develop and perform in a school play based on the theme “Celebrating Leadership”. The final production will take place at 1 pm on Friday May 4, 2018. On May 2, 2018, the school will host a family breakfast at 8 am in the gym and on May 10, 2018, the school will participate in the “Movin’ for Mental Health” community run.

Hines Creek Composite School
The community and parents of Hines Creek are invited to join students and staff of Hines Creek Composite School for a pancake breakfast on May 1, 2018 from 7:45 – 9 am. Students and staff will also be wearing green on May 9, 2018 in recognition of the importance of mental health.

Worsley Central School
On Wednesday May 2, 2018, students and staff will wear hats to school for Hats On for Mental Health and several students will attend the Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) Welcomes the North Fair in Fairview. On May 3, 2018, students will enjoy a theatre performance by the Mitelka Dance Group at GPRC and on May 3 and 4, several students will attend the GPRC Fairview Trades Camp. Several Worsley Central School students will also compete in PRSD’s Hand Games Competition at EE Oliver Elementary School

Fairview High School
As a part of Education Week activities, FHS will present two nights (April 27 and 28) of drama, desserts and live music courtesy of the FHS Dram Club and Band programs. On Friday May 4, 2018, students will also participate in the PRSD Hand Games Competition. During Mental Health Awareness Week, the School Wellness Action Team will make morning announcements focused on mental health topics. Students and staff will take part in Hats On for Mental Health by wearing hats to school on May 2, 2018. The School Wellness Action Team is also organizing a Mental Health Bingo where students will complete activities that promote positive mental health. Resources are also being shared with staff to integrate mental health conversations and learning into classroom learning.

Paul Rowe Jr Sr High School
During Education Week, Paul Rowe students will take part in the Trickster Residency theatre program where all students in the school help to develop and perform in a school play based on a theme. The school will present their drama production on Friday at 1 pm,  and on Monday May 7, 2018, the school is hosting a literacy event. Students from Paul Rowe High School will also participate in the PRSD Hand Games Competition on May 4, 2018. During Mental Health Awareness Week, there will be daily mental health awareness announcements and the school host their Hats On for Mental Health day on May 9, 2018. On May 10, 2018, Paul Rowe will participate in the “Movin’ for Mental Health’ Community Mental Health Run. Paul Rowe will host a community BBQ on May 10, 2018 at 5 pm.

Fairview and Area Learning Store
FALS students and staff are hosting a pizza lunch on May 2, 2018 at noon in celebration of Education Week.  

E.E. Oliver Elementary
E.E. Oliver students and staff will kick off Education Week with an assembly on Monday, April 30, 2018 at 1 pm followed by the school’s ‘Leaders as Readers’ event where community members will be reading and talking to students about how education is an important aspect of being a leader. On Tuesday May 1, 2018, EE Oliver will host their “Jump Rope for Heart” event to highlight citizenship, generosity and physical wellness. On Friday May 4, 2018, EE Oliver will host the Peace River School Division Hand Games Competition. To celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week, students and staff will wear hats to school for Hats on to Mental Health on May 2, 2018 and on Friday May 11, 2018, the school will be a sea of green as they wear green in recognition of the importance of mental health.

Menno Simons Community School
On May 2, 2018, students and staff will recognize the importance of mental health by wearing hats to school for Hats On for Mental Health day. On May 3, 2018, students will enjoy a theatre performance by the Mitelka Dance Group at GPRC in Fairview and on May 3 and 4, several students will attend the GPRC Fairview Trades Camp.

Lloyd Garrison School
On Monday, April 30, 2018, a surprise guest will come to the school and read to students. On Tuesday May 1, 2018, the school is hosting a “Reader’s Café” where special guests come in to read books to students. On May 2, 2018 there will be science and math challenges taking place in the gym from 1-3 pm and on Thursday, parents are invited for lunch in the gym with their children. On May 4, 2018 students will take part in the annual Hand Games competition at EE Oliver Elementary School. During Mental Health Awareness Week, students will decorate the sidewalks with messages about the importance of mental health and on May 8, 2018, students will wear hats to school to celebrate “Hats On for Mental Health.”

Dixonville School
In celebration of Education Week, Dixonville School is hosting a pancake breakfast on May 3, 2018 and the Student Council has various Education Week themed activities during the week. Students and staff will wear green on May 10, 2018 in recognition of the importance of mental health.  

Nampa Public School
Nampa Public School is hosting their annual Education Week community pancake breakfast on Thursday May 3, 2018 at 7:45 am. In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Week, the school will wear green and their favourite hat to school on May 3, 2018 for Hats On for Mental Health.

Peace River High School
For Education Week, Peace River High School will host “A day in the life at Peace High” through a digital walk through of the decisions and opportunities that a student at Peace River High School has in their normal school day. On Thursday May 3, 2018, the school is hosting their registration night and Gallery Walk where student work will be on display as well as information on different activities and initiatives in the school. Students from Peace River High School will also compete in the PRSD Annual Hand Games Competition on May 4, 2018. In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Week, Students and staff will wear hats to school for “Hats on for Mental Health” on May 2, 2018. The school is also having a Mental Health Bingo Card Challenge game where students collect various information regarding mental health. On Friday May 7, 2018, students and staff will wear green in recognition of the importance of mental health.

Red Earth Creek School
During the week, Red Earth Creek School students and staff will construct a school-wide story in recognition of Education Week and students will be challenged to solve a riddle per day during the week. On May 2, 2018, students will wear hats to school for Hats On for Mental Health day and students will read to each other during reading buddies time. The school will host Math Olympics on May 3, 2018 and several students will participate in the PRSD Hand Games Competition on May 4, 2018 at EE Oliver Elementary School in Fairview. The students and staff will also wear green to school during the week of May 7-11 in recognition of the importance of mental health.

T.A. Norris Middle School
TA Norris Middle School will host an Archery Tournament on Monday May 1, 2018 at 12:30 pm, wear hats to school for Hats On to Mental Health Day on May 2, 2018, and on Friday May 4, 2018, several students will participate in PRSD’s Hand Games Competition at EE Oliver Elementary School. During Mental Health Awareness Week, students will write inspiring messages on the sidewalks in chalk, wear hats to school on May 9, 2018 and wear green to school on May 10, 2018 in recognition of the importance of mental health.

Springfield Elementary
On May 1, 2018, the school’s Healthy Active Living Team (students and staff) will hold a special assembly to reinforce the importance of mental health. On May 3, 2018 the school will host their student talent show at 10 am and will also wear hats to school for Hats On for Mental Health Day. On Friday, May 4, 2018, several Springfield Elementary students will attend the PRSD Hand Games Competition in Fairview. During Education Week and Mental Health Awareness Week, there will be daily announcements on the school intercom about the importance of education and mental health. Students are encouraged to wear green to school every day during Mental Health Awareness Week (May 7-11, 2018).

Grimshaw Public School
On May 2, 2018, Grimshaw Public School students will wear hats for Hats On for Mental Health and over 100 Grimshaw Public School students will compete in the PRSD Hand Games Competition at EE Oliver Elementary School in Fairview on Friday May 4, 2018. During Mental Health Awareness Week, the school will broadcast mental health facts during the morning announcements, the students will contribute to a GPS Mental Health banner, engage in Mental Health question and answer time during class and make posters relating to the importance of mental health. During the week, students will watch “Inside Out” during the lunch break while enjoying popcorn and there will be a ‘Celebrities with Mental Illness” trivia with prizes to be won. Students will also have the chance to learn hip hop and how physical activity contributes to mental health and on Friday May 10,  2018, students and staff will wear green to school in recognition of the importance of mental health.

Peace Regional Outreach Campus and Daycare
On May 8, 2018, the school is hosting an Education Week luncheon, on May 9, 2018, students and staff will wear hats to school for Hats On for Mental Health day and on May 10, 2018, students and staff are encouraged to wear green in recognition of the importance of mental health.
