Fairview High School hosts 2A Senior Girls Volleyball Provincials

For immediate release
November 17, 2017-
Next week, some of the top high school volleyball teams in Alberta will join at Fairview High School (FHS) for the 2A Senior Girls Volleyball Provincials that take place from November 23-25, 2017.

“We are thrilled to host the 2A Senior Girls Volleyball Provincials” says FHS Principal David Hamlyn. “It is a great opportunity to showcase our school, the community and to cheer on our senior girls volleyball team. It is certainly a special experience for this wonderful and deserving group of student athletes to compete and host provincials in their home community. A ton of work has gone into the planning of this event and we thank the students, staff, parents, volunteers, planning committee members and those that have graciously donated to the tournament for their support and involvement.”

The three days of provincial play hosted by FHS will begin with opening ceremonies at the FHS gymnasium where players and coaches will be welcomed and cheered on by the school community, fellow competitors and special guests. The opening ceremony is set for 9:30 am on November 23, 2017 and will begin with the acknowledgement of territory land and blessings from Elder Dave Matilpi followed by greetings from the Honourable Marg McCuaig-Boyd, Energy Minister and MLA for Dunvegan-Central Peace-Notley and messages from Peace River School Division (PRSD) Superintendent Paul Bennett and Town of Fairview and Municipal District representatives. The EE Oliver Elementary School (EEO) bell choir will deliver a special rendition of the national anthem.

McCuaig-Boyd is a former PRSD educator, principal, coach, referee and served as the zone president and member at large for the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association.  The community of Fairview and FHS holds a special place in her heart being her home community and having served as a educator at FHS for a number of years.

“I am honoured to bring greetings on behalf of the province at the FHS 2A Senior Girls Volleyball Provincials and look forward to spending time with students, former colleagues and community members” says McCuaig-Boyd. “Being on a sports team provides students with valuable life skills such as time-management, teamwork, leadership and adversity and I am excited to watch some of the best teams in the province compete. Hosting provincials is an awesome opportunity for student athletes to showcase their skills, their school, their community and it gives players a strong sense of pride to play in at home in front of their family and friends.”

Provincial play will take place at FHS and EEO school gymnasiums with the first game starting at 11:30 am on November 23, 2017 with the championship match scheduled for 6:30 pm on November 25, 2017.

All games will be broadcast live on sportscanada.tv and photos of gameplay will be posted on the FHS official Facebook page during the provincial tournament. A photographer will also be on-site taking professional photos which will be available for purchase at EEO, FHS and online.

“It’s great that Fairview High School was chosen to host the provincial tournament and on behalf of the board of trustees, I extend gratitude to all involved in the planning and organizing of the tournament” says PRSD Board Chair Darren Kuester. “We wish players, coaches, family and the FHS school community a rewarding experience competing in, and watching provincial volleyball play.”

Players, coaches and family will also join for a banquet on Thursday night that includes dinner, greetings from PRSD Deputy Superintendent Karen Penney and special messages from guest speaker Kaitlyn Cordingley. Kaitlyn is a former Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) volleyball player who also competed on a national level and earned a silver medal from the Alberta College Athletic Conference. A special photo booth will also be set up that allows competitors and teams to capture fun memories of their time at the tournament.

"On behalf of the residents of Fairview, we extend a warm welcome to all players, coaches, parents and spectators” says Fairview Mayor Gordon MacLeod. “We hope you enjoy your time in the community and we wish all players a rewarding experience taking part in provincial level competition.”

Message from the Fairview High School tournament committee:
