Hundreds of students set to compete in Indoor Track Meet

Next Wednesday (February 8, 2017), students from the region will compete in the Peace Region Indoor Track Meet at the Mile Zero Multiplex in Grimshaw. Approximately 100 students from Peace River High School, TA Norris Middle School Springfield Elementary School, Holy Family School School, Grimshaw Jr Sr High School and Menno Simons Community School are attending.

“Indoor track meets are not commonly offered in the north” says Jenny Harpe, Peace River High School educator and co-organizer of the event. “We are happy to have access to the Mile Zero Regional Multiplex which gives us the space to run an event like this. They have been very supportive and accommodating as we plan our first ever indoor track meet.”

In mid-January, PRHS student, Brice Wilkes attended the Golden Bears Indoor Track Meet representing PRHS’s Indoor Track Club Team at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Brice placed third in the 1000m and 1500m events and says the Indoor Track Meet will be great for students.

“I think the Indoor Track Meet will show that track events are not just seasonal recreation” says Brice. “It will be good for students to broaden their scope of club sports, especially indoor track.”

Events for elementary students include the 40 meter sprint and relays for each grade. For junior and senior high students, events include a 40 meter, 200 meter, and 1000 meter sprint as well as 200 meter relay. The elementary events run from 10 am – 12:30 pm and the junior/senior high events go from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. The indoor track at the Multiplex will remain open for public use and until 1:00 pm when the junior/senior high events begin.

“The response from schools in the region has been great” says Sandra Scott-Wilkes, PRSD educator and co-organizer. “We have approximately 100 students registered already and can continue to take registrations from schools until the end of the day February 6th. The meet is open to all schools in the region.”
