The Peace River School Division Board of Trustees wishes to thank students, staff, parents, community members and organizations for your valuable contributions during the 2009-2010 school year. Peace River School Division values the support of countless individuals and organizations that assist to provide students with the best educational opportunities possible. Your commitment, dedication and passion toward student learning and success are greatly appreciated.

June 22, 2010 Board Highlights

• PRSD Celebrates Student and Coach in Special Ceremony
The Board of Trustees celebrated Bobbi Reyda, Grimshaw Jr Sr High grade 12 student and Dan Rossworm, Worsley Central School coach in a special ceremony on June 22, 2010. Reyda was celebrated for her accomplishment in achieving 100% on the Pure Mathematics 30 Diploma Exam. Rossworm was celebrated for being selected as Most Sportsmanlike Coach of the Year by the Alberta School Athletics Association. (separate media release issued June 24, 2010)
• PRSD Encourages Public to Provide Input
Peace River School Division is encouraging students, parents, and community members to log on and provide input through “Inspiring Action”, a provincial initiative that gathers the input of Albertans on education in the province. On-line responses to surveys is the sole method of input. Surveys and relevant information are available online at www.prsd.ab.ca by clicking the “We Engage” link. “This is the public’s chance to voice what is important to them and be a part of the change that our province is experiencing in education” says Nan Bartlett, PRSD Board Chair. “ The voice of the public is vital to ensure changes to education reflect student needs.” (separate media release issued June 23, 2010)
• 2010-2013 Three Year Education Approved
The Board of Trustees approved the 2010-2013 Three Year Education Plan at the June 22, 2010 board meeting. The 2010-2013 Three Year Education Plan outlines the division’s goals, priorities, accomplishments, financial information and illustrates strategies for improvement. The Three Year Education Plan is the division’s map in moving forward in providing students with the best education possible. The plan will be available online at www.prsd.ab.ca in the near future. • Board Appoints Public Member to Serve on PRSD’s Audit Committee
The Board of Trustees appointed Jason Warawa to serve on PRSD’s Audit Committee for a two year term commencing August of 2010. Warawa holds a Bachelor of Science Degree with Distinction and has extensive professional experience in the accounting field. Audit Committee members assist in overseeing the financial reporting process and monitoring the division’s compliance with laws and regulations regarding financial operations.
• Incoming Executive Assistant Appointed as Returning Officer
Melanie Mantai, Incoming Executive Assistant has been appointed by the Board of Trustees as the Returning Officer for the October 18, 2010 School Trustee Elections. The role of the Returning Officer is to ensure the election is conducted in accordance with the Local Authorities Elections Act. For more information regarding the upcoming elections, interested individuals are encouraged to visit the Alberta School Boards Association website at www.asba.ab.ca.
• PRSD Exploring Community Partnerships
The PRSD Board of Trustees directed PRSD’s Secretary Treasurer to explore possibilities for agreements with the Peace River Toy Lending Library and the Nampa Playschool Society to utilize PRSD facility space. In addition, PRSD is exploring an agreement with the Peace River Childcare Association to operate childcare services on site at Nampa Public School. During “Conversations Toward Student Success”, (Public Consultations held in February of 2010) community members expressed the importance of PRSD partnering with the communities to provide increased services and utilize space.
• Policy Review
The Board of Trustees approved third and final reading to Policy 3.51 Assessment and Communication of Student Learning (to replace Policy 3.51 and 3.54), passed second reading to Policy 5.44 Administering Medication to Students and passed first reading to Policy 1.29 Trustee Compensation. In addition, a technical amendment was approved to Policy 5.25.2 Superintendent Awards.passed To view policies under review go to www.prsd.ab.ca, “Policy Handbook” and “Policies Under Review.

Under the terms of The Schools Act, the Board of Trustees is responsible for setting the policies under which the Division and its schools will operate and to provide education for its students. Well defined policies set the goals and objectives for the system. In addition, the Board is responsible for ensuring that sufficient staff and facilities are in place to operate the school system in accordance with established policies.
