Deep understanding is emphasized rather than only discrete knowledge.
This might look like:
  • Units are planned using Understanding by Design
  • Learners solving real problems in collaboration with peers
  • Instruction builds upon learners’ conceptual frameworks
  • Instruction incorporates multimedia (e.g. sound and images)
  • Involves coaching for the learner, Assessment for Learning practices, (e.g. opportunities for review, redirection, revision).
  • Learners have time to internalize knowledge and skills, reflect on learning, discuss solution strategies, and even visit sites to develop deep understanding.
